Following the success of previous years, our Argentina: New Cinema series returns with some of the best films to emerge from Buenos Aires and beyond in 2015 and 2016. The annual event always draws large crowds from both the local Argentine community and foreign-language film fans, and the 15th installment promises to be no different, with an impressive lineup including several Los Angeles premieres.
Among the highlights are Argentina’s official Oscar submission, THE DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN, about a Nobel laureate’s (Oscar Martínez) return to the small town of his birth after years of self-imposed exile. Martínez also appears in KÓBLIC, bedeviling a guilt-ridden pilot played by Ricardo Darín. The arrival of a Chinese teen in Buenos Aires drives the gently comic THE FUTURE PERFECT. Balancing the lighter fare are the REAR WINDOW-esque thriller AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL and SAFE PASSAGE, a drama about after-effects of Argentina’s military coup. Don’t miss the opportunity to see South America’s first homegrown film industry come of age on the big screen!
All films are in Spanish with English subtitles unless otherwise noted. Series compiled by Pablo Maseda and Gwen Deglise. Program notes by John Hagelston and Jim Hemphill.
