ANIME FAVORITES

Animated films are generally viewed as children’s entertainment in America, but in Japan they target a much broader audience. Anime is rooted in long-standing traditions of Japanese manga, and in addition to reflecting the bold visual style of those graphic novels, the films tackle a wide range of subject matter – they’re not restricted to cuddly cartoon animals.

Against a backdrop of feudal Japan, NINJA SCROLL mixes samurai action with supernatural elements. Based on a popular novel by Hideyuki Kikuchi, VAMPIRE HUNTER D plays out as a dark fantasy even though it is set in the year 12,090 AD. Both REDLINE and GHOST IN THE SHELL offer technology-driven visions of the future; the former is a non-stop thrill ride, while the latter weaves a complex tale of cybernetic conspiracies.

Equally eye-catching if less kinetic is the work of Satoshi Kon, who directed four gem-like features before his untimely death in 2010, including MILLENNIUM ACTRESS and PERFECT BLUE (both of which feature film-star protagonists). Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata excelled at richly emotional human dramas, and the heart-breaking WWII story GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES and the portrait of a young woman at personal crossroads ONLY YESTERDAY are among his best.
