AN IN-PERSON TRIBUTE TO RON HOWARD

Few directors have balanced commercial and artistic filmmaking as effortlessly as two-time Oscar winner Ron Howard. Whether it be from in front of or behind the camera, or for film, television or documentaries, Howard has been a part of many of the most significant projects in every decade since the ’60s. Beginning as an actor in both film (THE JOURNEY and THE MUSIC MAN) and television (“The Andy Griffith Show”), Howard knew from a very young age that he would become a director. Throughout the 1960s and into the mid-’70s, the aspiring filmmaker first rose to fame onscreen, thanks largely to his performances as Richie Cunningham on “Happy Days” and in George Lucas’ 1973 AMERICAN GRAFFITI, in which he played a former high school class president heading off to college.

Howard kicked off his directing career for producer Roger Corman in 1977, helming the comedic road movie GRAND THEFT AUTO. As a vehicle for Howard to show off his writing and directing skills, it paved the way for the higher-profile comedy NIGHT SHIFT (1982), which starred Michael Keaton, Shelley Long and Henry Winkler. With a firm footing in Hollywood, Howard directed a number of commercial hits in rapid succession: SPLASH, COCOON, GUNG HO, WILLOW and PARENTHOOD. He was the recipient of the American Cinematheque Award in 1990.

Howard further solidified his status as a box office-friendly auteur with the critically acclaimed APOLLO 13, a riveting re-creation of a real-life space crisis. The film received nine Academy Award nominations, winning for Best Sound and Best Film Editing. Six years later, Howard himself took home Oscars for Best Director and Best Film for the Russell Crowe-led biopic A BEAUTIFUL MIND. In the 21st century, Howard remains a powerhouse of superbly crafted dramas such as CINDERELLA MAN, THE DA VINCI CODE, FROST/NIXON, RUSH, IN THE HEART OF THE SEA and STAR WARS: A SOLO STORY.
