A TRIBUTE TO RUTGER HAUER

When Rutger Hauer passed away in July, cinema lost one of its most singular character actors. With a striking visage that always expressed equal parts menace and charm, Hauer became a beloved fan favorite in Hollywood genre pictures movies. To celebrate the actor’s memory, the American Cinematheque and Beyond Fest present a 4-day, 8-movie tribute that spans his English-speaking film career.

Hauer got his start in Dutch TV and cinema as one of director Paul Verhoeven’s favorite leading men, portraying dashing protagonists with a cynical edge. He channelled this darker side for his American debut as an urban terrorist in the Sylvester Stallone thriller NIGHTHAWKS before attaining cinematic immortality as an unpredictably violent yet poignantly philosophical android in the science fiction classic BLADE RUNNER (where he improvised some of the film’s most famous lines). Hauer starred in the 1985 medieval fantasy LADYHAWKE alongside Michelle Pfeifer and Matthew Broderick, then reunited with fellow ex-pat Verhoeven to appear the same year in a much more brutal swashbuckler, the director’s Hollywood debut FLESH + BLOOD.

Though major box office stardom proved elusive throughout the remainder of the 1980s, VHS rental fandom erupted as Hauer tackled uniquely subversive roles in THE HITCHER, BLIND FURY and THE BLOOD OF HEROES. The actor’s cult-icon status was both honored and cemented with 2011’s HOBO WITH SHOTGUN, a midnight-movie exploitation homage built around Hauer’s titular and self-explanatory performance.
