A SALUTE TO KELLY REICHARDT

“Peter Hutton, who this movie is dedicated to, had a funny thing he used to say – that if you make enough work, people will be forced to deal with you,” reflects Kelly Reichardt as her new FIRST COW is poised to hit theaters. Over the last quarter-century, the indie writer-director has created a body of spare, character-focused films, with a Guggenheim Fellowship and Museum of Modern Art retrospective among her many laurels.

From her 1994 debut RIVER OF GRASS, Reichardt has sought out everyday people whom circumstance might try to marginalize and turned their daily lives into compelling drama. “Where does the power lie? Where do people fall on the ladder of success and survival? And how does that affect how they treat each other?,” she asks. “That seems to be at the core of the stories.” Reichardt’s films love to follow her characters’ routines as they evolve; in FIRST COW “it’s how the biscuit becomes the oily cake, and then Cookie says, ‘I think they would like something sweeter,’ and before you know it you’ve got a clafoutis on your hands.”

Much like the acclaimed OLD JOY (2006), the new film has a friendship at its core. FIRST COW is also set in the Pacific Northwest but in the 1820s, as a cook (John Magaro) and a sailor (Orion Lee) team in a business venture whose success depends on the titular dairy cow. Shot by long-time cinematographer Chris Blauvelt, the film’s look and tone owes a debt to UGETSU and the Apu trilogy, which also take place in small shanty towns. But in Kelly Reichardt’s hands, the simplest of settings can frame stories of universal appeal.
