15th Annual Focus on Female Directors

Our 15th annual shorts program celebrates the work of major festival award-winners and Oscar nominees, early work of industry heavyweights, exciting new work from documentarians and animators, plus the brightest new voices emerging from the festival circuit.

Films Include:

Sophia Nahli Allison’s “A Love Song for Latasha” (19 min.) A dreamlike archive in conversation with the past and the present to reimagine a more nuanced narrative of Latasha Harlins by excavating intimate and poetic memories shared by her cousin and best friend. 2019 AFI Fest Grand Jury Doc Prize winner.

Catherine Hardwicke’s “Puppy Does the Gumbo” (5 min.) Hardwicke’s charming UCLA student film from 1984 shows her nascent talent. Preserved by the UCLA Film & Television Archive.

Soudade Kaadan’s “Aziza” (13 min.) A dynamic take on the life of Syrian refugees told through black comedy. 2019 Sundance Festival Grand Prize winner.

Sarah McLean’s “Dragonfly” (8 min.) A family trip to the Miami aquarium goes awry when their car is hit by a cement truck.

Laura Nix’s “Walk Run Cha-Cha” (21 min.) Paul and Millie Cao lost their youth to the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Forty years later, they are rediscovering themselves on the dance floor. Nominated for an Academy Award!

World Premiere! Rachel Wolther’s ”Cinema Rules Everything Around Me” (5 min.) A profile on cinephile Caroline Golum where she talks about her love of going to the movies in NYC.

So Young Shelly Yo’s “Moonwalk with Me” (12 min.) A story from the heart about a Korean American girl named Juno who is haunted by her father's disappearances. An HBO APA Visionaries Short Film Award Finalist 2019.

Rosana Sullivan’s “Kitbull” (9 min.). This Oscar-Nominated animated short film charmingly details an unlikely connection between two creatures.

Discussion after the screening with filmmakers Sarah McLean (“Dragonfly”), Laura Nix and Colette Standstedt ("Walk Run Cha-Cha"), Rachel Wolther (”Cinema Rules Everything Around Me”) and So Young Shelly Yo (“Moonwalk with Me”). A reception follows in the lobby. There will also be a drawing for a director’s empowerment bag for all ticket holders.
