2017, Distrib Films/Icarus Films, 87 min, France, Dir: Raymond Depardon

Every year in France, 92,000 people are placed under psychiatric care without their consent. This quietly powerful documentary focuses on the hearings that, according to a 2013 law, are required to take place 12 days after each patient has been committed, when they are given an opportunity to argue for their freedom before a judge. Granted access to these hearings for the first time, celebrated filmmaker and photographer Raymond Depardon captures these extraordinary encounters between justice and psychiatry, giving a voice to those who have previously been voiceless. Encompassing questions of mental health, power, class, agency and the dynamics of societal institutions, 12 DAYS is consummately controlled yet suffused with empathy and compassion.

2016, Distrib Films/Icarus Films, 84 min, France, Dir: Raymond Depardon

Following his JOURNAL DE FRANCE, legendary filmmaker-photographer Raymond Depardon delivers a unique picture of France today. Shot as he canvassed homes, businesses and municipal buildings across the country, this tender, moving and powerful film brings the French people into Depardon’s mobile studio, where they speak their minds on a variety of topics. “An affectionately realistic portrait of a France we seldom see.” - Jordan Mintzer, The Hollywood Reporter.

Both films in French with English subtitles. | Screening format: DCP
