Art Deco Society Of Los Angeles Historic Lecture Series 2015
“Art Deco Mailboxes” / SKYSCRAPER SOULS
Presented by the American Cinematheque and the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles.

The Art Deco style celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2015. It was first seen at the Exposition of Decorative Arts in Paris in 1925 and later came to be known as Art Deco. It represented hope and progress and will be the topic of other lectures this year.

Art Deco Mailboxes,” 60 min.
Author and psychologist Karen Greene’s talk on her new book, Art Deco Mailboxes, will encompass a history of the Art Deco design movement - in particular its design context between the wars, what the design themes meant and why they resonated so powerfully in that era. She will also cover some postal history and the development of the Cutler Company (which invented the lobby mail collection box). Greene will decipher the power and meaning of the symbols used on mail boxes and the use of the deco themes to sell the USPS - and how phone company architect Ralph Walker similarly used deco themes to sell telecommunications.

Followed at 3:30 PM by SKYSCRAPER SOULS, a film set in a tower of power and wealth during this period, where communications by post were surely transmitted via an ornate Cutler mailbox!

The book "Art Deco Mailboxes" will be sold by Larry Edmunds Bookshop for $29.95 + tax.

Author Karen Greene will sign copies of her new book, Art Deco Mailboxes, in the lobby before and after the lecture.
1932, Warner Bros., 99 min, USA, Dir: Edgar Selwyn

This Edgar Selwyn-directed melodrama practically shouts its amorality from the rooftops. Warren Williams is a ruthless financier who will crush anyone in his path to maintain control of a hundred-story skyscraper. Maureen O’Sullivan, Veree Teasdale and Hedda Hopper are the exploited women in his life. This glossy, sexy soaper, adapted from Faith Baldwin’s novel, aptly contrasts the poor working stiffs slaving away as Williams’ office tenants while he luxuriates in the lap of decadent luxury.
