JOKER
2019, Warner Bros., 122 min, USA/Canada, Dir: Todd Phillips

Directed, co-written and produced by Oscar nominee Todd Phillips, JOKER is the filmmaker’s original vision of the infamous DC villain, an origin story infused with, but distinctly outside, the character’s more traditional mythologies. Forever alone in a crowd, Arthur Fleck (an indelible Joaquin Phoenix) wears two masks. One, he paints on for his day job as a clown. The other he can never remove; it’s the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel he’s a part of the world around him, and not the misunderstood man whom life is repeatedly beating down. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty and, ultimately, betrayal, Arthur makes one bad decision after another that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty, allegorical character study. Costarring Robert De Niro. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Phoenix), Best Director, Best Original Music Score (Hildur Guðnadóttir), and Best Cinematography (Lawrence Sher).

A STAR IS BORN (2018)
2018, Warner Bros., 135 min, USA, Dir: Bradley Cooper

Sam Elliott stars alongside first-time director and four-time Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper and, in her first leading film role, Lady Gaga, in this new take on the tragic love story. In a role Cooper created for him, Elliott plays Bobby, brother, manager, father figure and conscience to Cooper’s booze- and pill-addled Jackson Maine. Bobby has seen Jack through the best and worst of times, giving up any aspirations he held for himself to usher his more gifted little brother through rock stardom. But the sacrifice has left a bitter taste for both men that even brotherly love can’t completely overcome. The cast also includes Andrew Dice Clay and Dave Chappelle. “Sam Elliott is wonderful. He breaks your heart.” – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times.

WAR DOGS
2016, Warner Bros., 114 min, USA, Dir: Todd Phillips

Todd Phillips (THE HANGOVER) directs this comedic drama based on true events. Oscar nominee Jonah Hill and Miles Teller star as friends in their early 20s living in Miami Beach during the Iraq War who exploit a little-known government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on U.S. military contracts. The pair are soon raking in big money and living the high life, but they get in over their heads after landing a $300 million deal to arm the Afghan military—a deal that puts them in business with very shady people, some of whom work for the U.S. government. Costarring Bradley Cooper.
