TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT
VÕTA VÕI JÄTA
2018, 100 min, Estonia, Dir: Liina Trishkina-Vanhatalo

In this compelling social drama, blue-collar worker Erik (Reimo Sagor) faces a difficult decision when his ex-girlfriend Moonika (Liis Lass) re-enters his life with shocking news. Though his lifestyle is hardly appropriate for raising a child, Erik is the father of a newborn – who is about to be put up for adoption unless he intervenes. TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT, winner of the Jury’s Special Mention and Critics’ Award at the Arras Film Festival 2018, delivers a nuanced and touching portrait of fatherhood.

IN THE CROSSWIND
RISTTUULES
2014, 90 min, Estonia, Dir: Martti Helde

During the Soviet Union’s occupation of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, tens of thousands of people were forcibly resettled or sent to Siberian gulags. Told through the eyes of Erna (Laura Peterson), whose real-life diary provides most of the narration, this elegy to these forgotten victims takes an unusual visual approach: Shot in B&W, the camera moves around stationary actors in striking tableaux vivants. In Estonian with English subtitles.
