THE MANITOU
1978, Rialto Pictures, 104 min, USA, Dir: William Girdler

Gonzo 1970s drive-in movie madness, with Susan Strasberg as a young woman who has a 400-year-old medicine man growing out of her back. Tony Curtis stars as a bogus spiritualist who comes face-to-face with the midget demon, with the help of New Age midwife Michael Ansara. Must be seen to be believed.

THE TRIP
1967, MGM Repertory, 85 min, USA, Dir: Roger Corman

Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Bruce Dern and Susan Strasberg star in this Jack Nicholson-scripted story of a burned-out TV commercials director who takes the ultimate acid trip. American International Pictures changed the ending without Corman’s approval to suggest a more anti-drug stance; still, the film captures the Sunset Strip at the height of its lurid, frenzied glory. Music by The Electric Flag.

SCREAM OF FEAR
1961, Sony Repertory, 81 min, Dir: Seth Holt

Director Seth Holt’s first Hammer Studios effort tracks wheelchair-bound Penny (Susan Strasberg), who returns to her family’s French Riviera estate after her mother’s untimely death. Handsome chauffeur Bob (Ronald Lewis) and sinister Dr. Gerrard (Christopher Lee) enter the mix, and someone seems bent on driving Penny over the edge into madness or, worse, death!
