HAPPY 140
FELICES 140
2015, Latido Films, 98 min, Spain, Dir: Gracia Querejeta

Elia (Maribel Verdu) has just hit the jackpot – literally. One of the things she spends her 140 million Euro lottery prize on is a 40th-birthday bash in the Canary Islands, to which she invites a motley group of family and friends, including the ex she still pines for. But proximity to wealth can warp even the closest relationships, and the reunion soon takes a shocking turn. “Querejeta has assembled one of the best possible casts which Spanish cinema can provide.” - Jonathan Holland, The Hollywood Reporter. In Spanish with English subtitles.

15 YEARS AND A DAY
15 AÑOS Y UN DIA
2013, 100 min, Spain, Dir: Gracia Querejeta

When Jon (newcomer Aron Piper) is expelled from school, his mother (Maribel Verdu, a Goya winner for last year’s BLANCANIEVES) sends him to the coast to live with his grandfather (Tito Valverde), who she hopes can instill some discipline in the troubled teen. The ex-soldier introduces Jon to a top student, but it’s not enough to keep his charge away from a dangerous local gang. Partly inspired by director Gracia Querejeta’s struggles with her own son, this nuanced family drama picked up Málaga Spanish Film Festival awards for Best Film and Screenplay. In Spanish with English subtitles.
