DRUNKEN MASTER
JUI KUEN
1978, Sony Repertory, 111 min, Hong Kong, Dir: Yuen Woo-ping

This irreverent take on Chinese folk hero Wong Fei-hung (played to perfection by Jackie Chan) is one of the most wildly entertaining kung fu movies ever made. To teach him some discipline, the troublemaking Wong is sent to his uncle (Yuen Siu-tien), an exacting martial arts expert known as the Drunken Master - a man with a reputation for crippling his students. As DRUNKEN MASTER builds to its climactic showdown, its slapstick is as brilliantly choreographed as its fight scenes. English dubbed version.

SNAKE IN THE EAGLE’S SHADOW
SE YING DIU SAU
1978, Sony Repertory, 90 min, Hong Kong, Dir: Yuen Woo-ping

Martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo-ping makes his directorial debut on this seminal Hong Kong action film, whose infusion of comedy and acrobatic stunts helped propel Jackie Chan to stardom. Chan plays a put-upon janitor at a martial arts school who befriends an old beggar (Yuen Siu-tien, the director’s father), who turns out to be a kung fu master fleeing the assassins of the Eagle Claw clan. English dubbed version.
