THESE ARE THE RULES
TAKVA SU PRAVILA
2014, 78 min, Croatia, Dir: Ognjen Svilicic

A Zagreb couple’s realization that the social institutions around them are riddled with apathy is the core of this subtle and haunting drama from writer-director Ognjen Svilicic. When 18-year-old Tomica (Hrvoje Vladisavljević) returns home badly beaten, parents Ivo (Venice Film Festival best actor Emir Hadžihafizbegović) and Maja (Jasna Zalica) face uphill battles to get medical treatment and justice for their son. In Croatian with English subtitles.

HANDYMEN
MAJSTORI
2013, HRT/Croatian Radiotelevision, 75 min, Croatia, Dir: Dalibor Matanić

Though housewife Keka (Areta Ćurković) feels her marriage to Baja (Nikša Butijer) may be out of steam, the attentions of inept handyman Ilija (Goran Bogdan) are little consolation. After a warring Baja and Ilija practically destroy her home, Keka escapes to a coastal village, where a third man (Bojan Navojec) enters the picture. As in his earlier CASHIER WANTS TO GO TO THE SEASIDE, writer-director Matanić mines plenty of humor from these characters’ mundane lives, including some wonderful slapstick sequences. In Croatian with English subtitles.

SONJA AND THE BULL
SONJA I BIK
2013, Croatian Radiotelevision/HRT, 106 min, Croatia, Dir: Vlatka Vorkapić

This romantic comedy, directed by first-timer Vlatka Vorkapić, is set in the world of bull fighting. Animal-rights activist Sonja (Judita Franković) is caught up in the battle to pass a bill making bullfighting illegal. Her work raises a red flag with a big-time fight organizer, who sends his insurance-agent son (Goran Bogdan) to deal with the woman. A Croatian box office hit, SONJA AND THE BULL is a sexy and sweet look at tradition, differences and how opposites really do attract. In Croatian with English subtitles.
