BREATHE IN
2014, Cohen Film, 98 min, USA, Dir: Drake Doremus

Living with his wife and high school-aged daughter in upstate New York, Keith Reynolds (Guy Pearce) is a musician who finds his work as a piano teacher stifling - until the arrival of gifted pianist Sophie Williams (Felicity Jones), who is searching for fulfillment herself. That Sophie is also a British exchange student staying at Keith’s home makes their budding attraction even more problematic. Director Drake Doremus (LIKE CRAZY) handles what could be a formulaic situation with unusual sensitivity, aided by a top-flight cast that includes Amy Ryan and Mackenzie Davis.

JACK GOES BOATING
2010, Anchor Bay, 89 min, USA, Dir: Philip Seymour Hoffman

Philip Seymour Hoffman makes his directorial debut with this insightful romantic drama. Awkward New York City limo driver Hoffman grows closer to Brooklyn funeral home worker Amy Ryan while the couple who introduced them, John Ortiz and Daphne Rubin-Vega, begin to struggle with their own marriage. Adapted from the acclaimed Off-Broadway play (which starred all of these actors except Ryan), this charmingly low-key indie boasts superb performances and an eye for telling details.
