Series at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica

Fri, Apr 13, 2012 - Sun, Apr 15, 2012

Deeply rooted in the country's national literature, Croatian films reflect Central European attitudes about artistic expression. This year’s New Croatian Cinema series lineup includes Croatian box-office hit and family adventure KOKO AND THE GHOSTS, directed by Daniel Kusan; Rajko Grlic’s farcical romantic comedy romp JUST BETWEEN US; Nevio Marasovic’s debut feature about the world’s last reality show, THE SHOW MUST GO ON; Branko Ivanda’s LEA AND DARIJA, a moving drama about a friendship between teenage ballerinas on the eve of World War II; and Vinko Bresan’s kinky black comedy WILL NOT STOP THERE.

Wed, Apr 4, 2012 - Wed, May 30, 2012

From his tentative initial forays like THAT COLD DAY IN THE PARK to his smash successes like M*A*S*H and NASHVILLE, to his critically acclaimed, cult sleepers like MCCABE & MRS. MILLER, THE LONG GOODBYE, 3 WOMEN, and COME BACK TO THE FIVE AND DIME, JIMMY DEAN, JIMMY DEAN, to his later, much-lauded THE PLAYER, SHORT CUTS and the award-winning GOSFORD PARK, Robert Altman has had an incredibly diverse career. After repeated viewings of his films, seemingly diverse and unrelated movies become oddly connected, with similar thematic threads running through them as well as a common ground where the performers are the centerpiece. Simultaneously allowed wide latitude to do their thing but ultimately focusing on the goal maestro Altman has set for them, the actors achieve a kind of nirvana of simulated reality and improvised truth.

Malcolm McDowell In Person!

Fri, Mar 16, 2012 - Sun, Mar 18, 2012

Actor Malcolm McDowell’s working-class roots anticipated his brilliant film debut in IF... and his subsequent portrayal of charming sociopath Alex in A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. This startling, explosive talent was unwilling to ever accept the status quo. His track record, ranging from films like O LUCKY MAN! and TIME AFTER TIME to later acclaimed movies such as ASSASSIN OF THE TSAR and the stylish GANGSTER NO. 1, are evidence of a fiery, youthful brilliance undiminished by time. Join us for an in-person tribute to the actor on the occasion of his receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!

Wed, Mar 14, 2012 - Wed, Mar 28, 2012

Terence Davies In Person!

Sun, Mar 11, 2012 - Mon, Mar 12, 2012

Arguably the greatest living British filmmaker, Terence Davies first established himself with three celebrated shorts, known collectively as THE TERENCE DAVIES TRILOGY. Like his trilogy, subsequent features DISTANT VOICES, STILL LIVES and THE LONG DAY CLOSES are set in postwar England, which inspires the elemental dichotomy at the heart of Davies’ work: a contrast between the somber outside world and the intimate interior world, where a promise of warmth and camaraderie is tempered by poverty and the threat of violence or isolation. Join us for this in-person tribute to Terence Davies, which will also include a Members-only screening of his most recent film, THE DEEP BLUE SEA, starring Rachel Weisz.
