Fri, Apr 5, 2013 - Wed, Apr 10, 2013

Montgomery Clift (1920-1966) remains one of film’s great enigmas. Beginning in his teens, he spent 10 years perfecting his craft in New York theater before heading to Hollywood where he made an immediate splash with RED RIVER and THE SEARCH (which brought Clift his first of four Academy Award nominations). His sex-symbol good looks and Method acting intensity made Clift one of the movies’ most sought-after stars, though his idiosyncratic choices and reluctance to play by the studio rule book meant that for every hit like A PLACE IN THE SUN or FROM HERE TO ETERNITY, there would be a corresponding (if fascinating) flop. Join us for a selection of some of Clift's most intriguing films.

New Restorations!

Fri, Apr 5, 2013 - Sun, Apr 21, 2013

The American Cinematheque and the Film Noir Foundation return with the 15th annual Festival of Film Noir. Gumshoes, shady dames and murderous mobsters converge for three weeks of dark tales of jaded gumshoes, femmes fatale and menacing heavies in gloriously gritty black and white.

Nicola Lubitsch In Person!

Thu, Mar 28, 2013 - Mon, Apr 1, 2013

One of the most beloved directors of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Ernst Lubitsch (1892-1947) started out as an actor in Berlin before moving behind the camera. Working with stars like Pola Negri and Emil Jannings, Lubitsch rose to the top of the German film industry with costume dramas like MADAME DUBARRY. But Lubitsch also made successful comedies in Germany, and when the director moved to America in 1922, lighter fare became his primary focus. Join us for our salute to the comedy films of Ernst Lubitsch, including HEAVEN CAN WAIT, DESIGN FOR LIVING, THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER and THE MERRY WIDOW.
