Join us for our annual celebration of Italian cinema, opening with Italy’s official Oscar submission for Best Foreign-Language Film, TERRAFERMA. Also on offer is a selection of powerful dramas, featuring Alice Rohrwacher's Cannes official selection CORPO CELESTE, about a self-conscious preteen preparing for her Catholic confirmation, and Cristina Comencini's Venice Film Festival official selection WHEN THE NIGHT, starring Claudia Pandolfi as a struggling single mother on vacation in rural Italy. Director Terry Gilliam will be presented with the CIS Award on opening night!

Wim Wenders In Person!

Wed, Nov 9, 2011 - Wed, Nov 30, 2011

Director Wim Wenders began his career in the new German cinema movement of the 1970s, utilizing themes of identity and landscape, coupled with a deep sense of observation and search for truth in the world surrounding us. The road movie has been one of his favored modes of expression, from ALICE IN THE CITIES to PARIS, TEXAS. A director of deeply romantic fantasies such as the acclaimed WINGS OF DESIRE, Wenders also is a meticulous chronicler of 20th (and now 21st) century culture and politics. Wenders is known as a top-notch documentarian: his BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB remains one of the most beloved of all music documentaries. Join us at the Cinematheque for a selection of Wim Wenders’ finest films!

Terry Gilliam In Person!

Sun, Nov 6, 2011 - Sat, Nov 19, 2011

Visionary director Terry Gilliam began his career as an animator, but it was with MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL that he would evolve into a world-class feature-film director. Gilliam went on to create a series of fantastic spectacles characterized by striking imagery, bold characterizations, and a strong mistrust of authority in films such as TIME BANDITS, BRAZIL, THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN and TWELVE MONKEYS. We are thrilled to welcome Terry Gilliam to the Aero Theatre for a retrospective of his work, which also includes his new short film, “The Wholly Family.”

Wed, Oct 26, 2011 - Sun, Oct 30, 2011

To generations of fans who squirm with delighted unease at the sound of his mellifluously sinister voice, Vincent Price (1911 - 1993) is one of the greatest icons in horror cinema. Join us this Halloween season as we celebrate the centennial of his birth with a program of his greatest chillers, including MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH, THE RAVEN, HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, WITCHFINDER GENERAL, THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES, and THEATER OF BLOOD.

Wed, Oct 5, 2011 - Wed, Oct 12, 2011

Director Sidney Lumet (1924 -2011) was one of the most diverse craftsmen in the history of cinema, with examples of virtually every genre on his resume, from institutional satire (NETWORK) to musical to suspense (MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS). He was best known for excelling at a very specific kind of urban law-and-order drama, often featuring underdog characters fighting against insurmountable forces, represented by the complex ethical examinations and gritty realism of SERPICO, THE VERDICT, THE PAWNBROKER and 12 ANGRY MEN. Join us for a retrospective of Sidney Lumet’s greatest films!
